Hanukkah on the Hoan: Night #5
Light the Hoan and Milwaukee Jewish Federation, Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC, will partner to celebrate Hanukkah on the Hoan
Light the Hoan, in partnership with the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC, will light the Hoan Bridge in reflection of the Hanukkah menorah in celebration of Hanukkah 2021. A new support beam will be lit daily, from right to left, with flickering red, orange and yellow lights to represent the light of a candle’s flame. The first lighting ceremony will begin with lighting a support beam that symbolizes the Shamash, or helper candle, which will light each representative candle thereafter.
Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration that commemorates the Jewish rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE. During the rededication, there was just enough oil left to keep the menorah in the Temple aflame for one day; a miracle, the oil lasted eight days long. In remembrance of this miracle, candles on the menorah are lit in an eight-day celebration of light.
“We return for a second year of lighting up the Hoan with a continued hope that Milwaukee will find hope and inspiration during this season,” said Miryam Rosenzweig, CEO and President at the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
On the final night of Hanukkah, December 5th, MJF and the JCC will host a community celebration at the base of the Hoan, featuring holiday treats, a live DJ, fire juggling, ice sculpting, and more! The event will run from 4-5:30 pm and culminate with the eighth and final Hanukkah candle being lit on the Hoan at 5 pm sharp.
“We are in the business of creating spaces for the community to gather. Whether those opportunities are in-person, virtual, or on the largest bridge in all of Milwaukee – we’re proud to partner with the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and Light the Hoan to inspire the entire community in this inclusively Jewish experience,” said Nancy Kennedy Barnett, Board Chair, Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC.
